Set the limit before the first race
Two decisions belong at home, before the trip: how much you will spend on the slots and what time you will leave. Put both on paper. Next, build the drive home into the plan and settle who is driving before anyone takes a seat. Those limits come easier at the kitchen table than in front of a machine.
Once that amount is gone, leave the floor, even if the time you picked has not arrived. Going back to the bank machine for more turns a limit into a suggestion. Gateway Casinos Clinton keeps its own clock as well. The slots run from 9 AM to 1 AM every day, so play stops at 1 AM whatever the plan said.
The numbers to call
- ConnexOntario takes calls about gambling, mental health and addiction at 1-866-531-2600, at any hour and at no cost, and keeps what you say private. You can also text CONNEX to 247247 or open a chat at connexontario.ca.
- OLG's Virtual PlaySmart Centre picks up at 1-833-888-2306 between 11 AM and 7 PM, every day of the week. Its responsible gambling site is playsmart.ca.
- My PlayBreak is OLG's self-exclusion from land-based gaming: a break of 3 or 6 months, or of 1 to 5 years, keeps you out of every Ontario casino and cannot be ended early. To enrol, call the OLG Support Centre at 1-800-387-0098 or ask casino staff.
- BetGuard, at betguard.ca, is iGaming Ontario's single sign-up for leaving online gambling, open to anyone 19 or older. It blocks every regulated Ontario site, OLG.ca included, for 6 months, 1 year, 5 years or a term you choose, but not land-based casinos.
How the casino handles a break
In January 2014 the Responsible Gambling Council awarded RG Check accreditation to the slots at Clinton Raceway, the room that is now Gateway Casinos Clinton. Anyone who has been trespassed or self-excluded, whether from this casino or from any Ontario gaming property, may not visit. If you want a break of your own, casino staff can start a My PlayBreak enrolment for you. The OLG Support Centre at 1-800-387-0098 handles enrolment too, and a term, once started, runs to its end.
Questions from the booth
- Can you reach ConnexOntario after midnight?
- Yes, the line at 1-866-531-2600 answers at any hour and costs nothing to call. Texting CONNEX to 247247 or opening a chat at connexontario.ca works as well.
- Can a My PlayBreak be shortened once it starts?
- A My PlayBreak term cannot be shortened. Whether it runs 3 or 6 months or 1 to 5 years, it bars you from every Ontario casino until it ends, so choose the length with care.
- Is the Virtual PlaySmart Centre open on a Sunday?
- It is, because the centre answers every day of the week from 11 AM to 7 PM at 1-833-888-2306. Outside those hours, ConnexOntario at 1-866-531-2600 is still taking calls.
